82 Suspected Perpetrators of Buton Village Clash Arrested

10 June 2019 12:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSoutheast Sulawesi Police arrested 82 suspected perpetrators of the clash between villagers of Gunung Jaya and Sampuabalo, Buton, Southeast Sulawesi.

“The examination is underway,” said the police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Goldenhart when reached on Monday, June 10.

The clash emerged between the two villagers on June 4 after around 40 villagers of Sampuabalo passing Gunung Jaya village while riding their motorcycles in celebration of Eid al-Fitr on the night before Eid or Malam Takbiran.

The young people made noise with their vehicles in the residential area. “Gunung Java villagers angered by the motorcycle noise,” said Harry.

At the junction of the two villages, dozens of young people shouted which led to a brawl. At 21:00 local time, two officers of Sampuabalo Resort Police parted the two groups, yet the clash resumed until the next day.

On June 5, at 14:30 Central Indonesian Time (WITA), Sampuabalo residents came to Gunung Jaya village and threw Molotov cocktails causing 87 houses to burn.

Buton Resort Police then deployed a Community Control (Dalmas) team to the location at 16:21. The police deputy chief Comr. Armond Von Bullow led the security measure. The incident killed two people and eight injured, while 87 houses burnt down.

Three company-level units (SSK) or 300 personnel of police mobile brigade (Brimob) guarded the borderline of the two villages to ensure the community’s safety and prevent a further clash. The police set the highest security alert (Siaga 1) following the village clash.
